SPRAGUE PULSE
WEEK OF MARCH 11, 2024
Letter from the Co-Presidents

Hello Sprague!

It's said that March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb... here's hoping that all the March rain brings some lovely April flowers?! On the upside, mild temps means it's easier to be outdoors, and the WGS Green Tip of the Month, shared below, reminds us of all the amazing benefits of outdoor adventures. Don't miss it.

There's plenty of other activity this week to keep us all busy — a Fiorella's Fundraiser on Monday, a Spring Auction Meeting Tuesday, and a PTO Meeting on Friday. Phew!

And don't forget about the Sprague Ice Skating Party later this month — be sure to register your skaters soon. $10 covers an hour of skating AND rental ice skates! We hope to see everyone there; it's sure to be a "wicked fun" time!

Best,

Rose & Wendy

RECENT EVENTS

WHAT: Bash the Trash

GRADE: All School Event

On Wednesday, March 6th Bash the Trash, an environmental education and musical performance group, visited Sprague, doing assemblies for K-2 and 3-5 separately. The performers - Jessica, JJ and Trevor - captivated the students' attention with ease as they weaved musical and scientific terms throughout their performance. The students hypothesized what noise different materials would make as the artists performed. The performers played instruments made out of all sorts of found, recycled materials and engaged the students in call and response, collaborating on a musical piece together at the end!

Ask your student:

  • What are the three "r's" they discussed and how are they important?
  • How can we reduce? How can we reuse?
  • What are some examples of materials that the performers used for their instruments?
  • What materials could you use to make a guitar at home?

WHAT: Potato Hill Poetry

GRADE: 2nd Grade

This past Friday, the 2nd Graders enjoyed a visit and poetry workshop with Andrew Green of Potato Hill Poetry. In addition to reading poems and writing their own poems, the students learned Andrew’s favorite habit for keeping track of ideas; he always carries a pocket sized notebook because he never knows when an idea will inspire him. Andrew also told us “ Poetry belongs to us all” and encouraged the students to write about anything and everything in their lives.

Nature, food, sports and people are all great jumping off points for poetry writing. The important part is to pay attention, observe and then describe.

Ask your second grader about some poetry writing prompts. For example:

  • What matters to you?
  • Also using the 5 W’s: Who, What, When, Where, and Why can be helpful to structure your poem.
  • Another way to help structure poems is by using the 5 senses ( taste, touch, smell, sight and sound) as prompts.

WELLESLEY HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM EVENT

The WPS community is cordially invited to watch the Wellesley High School Robotics Team compete in the First Robotics Competition (FRC)Team Ultraviolet #8567 on March 23rd and 24th. This competition is the culmination of months of work put into building their robot, and it is an exciting event for all ages, especially kids who are interested in STEM. It’s a preview of the enormous fun they can expect with high school’s STEM programs.

NE District Greater Boston Event 2024

Where:Revere High School, 101 School St, Revere, MA

Details: There are 38 teams competing at this event. It's free and open to the public to watch. WELLESLEY A BETTER CHANCE IS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

WGS GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH

What if there was one thing you could do for your kids that would reduce stress and fatigue, promote creativity, teach responsibility and increase focus? And what if that one thing was right outside your front door? With Spring approaching, it's time to get outdoors!!! Time spent in nature is good for our kids! Check out this article: Why Kids Need to Spend Time in Nature - Child Mind Institute.

With electronics seemingly taking control of our kids' free time, mental health experts remind us of the importance and value of staying in touch with nature; our kids' health and happiness may depend on it!
