RECENT EVENTS

WHO: 5th Grade

WHAT: Fifth graders enjoyed a planetarium show brought to them by New England Sci Tech this week. The show included a multi-media show  "Journey to the Center of the Galaxy"

about the Milky Way and black holes, followed by a Live

Star Show about the stars, planets, moon, solar system, nebulae, and galaxies, as well

as constellations in the Wellesley sky this spring. Students also got

to hold a meteorite from the asteroid belt that is older than earth

After the show, one child exclaimed, "It was amazing but I'm so dizzy." Ask your kids if they felt similarly and if so, why?

WHO: 3rd Grade

WHAT: On Friday, the third grade classes were visited by Dr. G from High Tech High Touch New England to explore the properties of magnetism. Students used prediction, observation and experimentation to explore magnetic properties. The students made their own electromagnet and discussed the uses of magnets and magnetic forces in everyday life.

Ask your 3rd grader:

1) What causes magnetic force?

2) What surprised you that was or was not magnetic?

3) Why are some coins magnetic and others are not?

4) Which animal did we learn about that uses magnetic force to find their nesting ground?

WELLESLEY DPW BLACK EARTH COMPOST PILOT PROGRAM

Take part in curbside composting for food waste. The Wellesley Department of Public Works (DPW) is partnering with Black Earth Compost on a new curbside composting pilot program.

Residents who sign up for this program will have their food waste picked up once a week at their home for a fee. The curbside composting program is an alternative to the free food waste drop off program at the Recycling and Disposal Facility (RDF).

The first 250 Wellesley residents to sign up for the program will receive a free starter kit. Register for this program at Black Earth Compost.

Once 50 customers sign up, Black Earth Compost will begin weekly pick-ups in Wellesley on Wednesdays. The program follows a tiered pricing structure; as more customers sign up, the fees go down.

Customers reap what they recycle, receiving one (1) free bag of compost every year they participate in the program.

Visit the RDF Recycling webpages to learn more!

WPS FAMILY STEAM NIGHT

On Monday evening, May 20, 2024, WPS will host a Family STEAM evening for our PreK-12 families.

We will have STEAM activities including coding, programming robots, science and math games, working with circuits and more.

Additionally, Amon Millner, Associate Professor of Computing and Innovation at Olin College of Engineering will be our featured speaker. He will talk about a variety of technology and engineering topics including ways children can incorporate computing and programming into the way they play, learn and prepare for ways to help their community.

Please join us for an evening immersed in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

WAIT UNTIL 8TH

Thank you to Sprague mother Allison S. Baker, MD, Child, Adolescent and Perinatal Psychiatrist, for spearheading this initiative.

Did you know? The mere presence of one's own smartphone reduces available cognitive capacity.

We all want our children and one another to thrive at school, at home, and in our lives. Being fully present and with all of our available cognitive capacities is an essential ingredient of health.

Join us in Sprague's Wait Until 8th Pledge

This is a national pledge that empowers parents to rally together to delay giving a SMARTPHONE* until at least 8th grade. When we band together as a Spraguewell community, it decreases the pressure to give our children a smartphone at an early age. Ten years old is the average age children get their first smartphone. We can change this as a community and directly improve the mental health of our children and families.

More than 50,000 parents have said yes to waiting on smartphones for their children.

Signing the pledge is easy - visit https://www.waituntil8th.org/, enter your information, and look up Sprague using the "*Find Your Child's Current School" tool to join our community.

*Flip phones, watches with calling functions, etc. are not considered to impact children's mental health in the same negative way as smartphones.

Sign Sprague's Wait Until 8th Pledge!

SHOPPERS CORNER AT SCHOFIELD

Did you know Shopper’s Corner is a unique resale shop located right in the basement of Schofield Elementary School? The shop sells new and gently used clothing and accessories from infant through adult.

Not only do they promote sustainability, their prices are rock bottom: items start at $1 and most are less than $5!

The store is open during the school year every Wednesday that school is in session from 8:30am to 12:15pm and the first Saturday of most months from 9am to 11am.
