Discovery Museum Presents "Sound Waves"

February 6th-7th

4th Grade

Last Monday and Tuesday the Sprague and Hunnewell 4th graders had an incredible sound presentation from the Discovery Museum sponsored by Creative Arts and Sciences (CAS) The students have been learning about sound in their classroom. This presentation allowed them to try hands-on experiments to see how sound travels through different materials.

Ask a 4th grader for the answers to these questions!

  • Does sound travel faster through water or air?
  • What happens when a metal object is struck and then placed near a ping pong ball?
  • What about when a tuning fork is struck then placed in water?

WGS GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH

Did you know that over 30% of Wellesley's greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation and that approximately 30% of Wellesley's traffic is school-related?  Armed with this data, we now know that our school community can make a difference doing something we do every day; going to school.  With warmer weather on the horizon, consider walking and biking and if driving, you will make an impact by shutting off your ignition while in car line.  Each year, the US produces over 30 million tons of CO2 by idling!  Be on the lookout for our Anti-Idling Pledge coming soon and go Idle Free in 2023!!

STRIVING TO ADVANCE RECREATIONAL SERVICES - STARS

Help WPS families fundraise for the S.T.A.R.S, Wellesley’s adaptive swim club for children and adults with special needs. Donations will help the team purchase specialized safety equipment and design events for many of their young swimmers who fall outside of the Special Olympics demographic. Michelle Shaw is running Boston on behalf of the S.T.A.R.S. to increase awareness of the need for accessible athletics, connect families looking for adaptive swim and recruit volunteer coaches. Michelle says, “Town athletics - and all the feelings of joy, accomplishment and camaraderie- are out of reach for more kids than I ever realized, and I'm a parent of one with pretty significant challenges. I want Eleanor and her friends to be able to participate in sport together and feel seen and included on Boston’s biggest day of the year.”
