3rd Grade - Plimoth Patuxet Peoples of the Dawn Land
Last week, the 3rd graders were treated to an amazing experience - hearing from a representative of the Wampanoag tribe about the daily life of his people from the 17th century - through today. The students got to hold actual tools, weapons, household items, pelts, and other items.
Have a 3rd grader? Check out these conversation tips!
What were the four basic things the Wampanoag people needed to survive?
Food/ water, shelter, weapons/ tools, clothing. See how much they remember about how they procured these things!
What kind of food did the Wampanoag hunt?
In the winter, they hunted deer, bear, elk, moose, because they didn’t have refrigerators or freezers and needed to keep the meat cold. They also ate fish and shellfish throughout the year, and in milder weather, foraged for nuts, berries - their only source of sugar, as there were no honey bees or maple trees in the area.
Most of their diet was sourced from their gardens! In the spring and summer, they would move into single family settlements where they would plant their dried vegetables - including corn, beans, and squashes, which they sun dried and preserved to last throughout the year.
