SUBJECT: Sprague PULSE - Week of October 17, 2022

Week of October 17, 2022

Hello Spraguewell Community!

It was wonderful to see over 100 families in attendance Friday night at the Fall Fest! We sure lucked out with the change in weather and were able to keep the activities outside.

The Book fair week has arrived! We are excited to welcome the students & their families in for an opportunity to buy some exciting new books. Book Fair times have been shared by teachers and flyers went out last week. Thank you to the volunteers who have signed up to assist at the Book Fair. Please see the information below regarding the Book Fair.

Smile big and say "Cheese" for Friday's school picture day.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Best,
Sneha & Rose

For Everyday Sprague

THANK YOU

A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to a successful and fun Fall Festival and Movie Night. A BIG thank you to our many volunteers who helped acquire donations and pickup items to make our night a success for the 5th graders & PTO. This event could not have been a success without your help!

Cheers to our Social Committee Sangita Kalidas & Dena Giggie for organizing and Treasurers Jill Wells & Hande Aparslan selling tickets into the sunset.

Thank you to the 5th graders and their families for their support managing the food and craft stations. All of your volunteer work is greatly appreciated.

We hope you enjoyed a delicious meal by our generous 5th parent ERIC HAMELBURG (MASS BARBECUE OF NEW ENGLAND) who smoked roast beef & pulled pork and grilled hamburgers & hot dogs for a yummy treat.

Donations were also graciously accepted from Roche Bros, Volante Farms, 99 Restaurant, Frans Flowers, Peter's Pizza and Stop & Shop.

CREATIVE ARTS AND SCIENCES (CAS) UPDATE

Ever ask your kids, "did anything exciting happen at school today?" and get the answers, "Nothing," or "I don't remember" in return? If you're looking for better conversation starters to get them talking, check in with the Pulse each week for details about Creative Arts & Sciences (CAS) events! As a reminder, your PTO donations fund these informative, hands-on lessons. Thank you for your kind contributions!

Classroom Visit Spotlight:

3rd Grade - Plimoth Patuxet Peoples of the Dawn Land

Last week, the 3rd graders were treated to an amazing experience - hearing from a representative of the Wampanoag tribe about the daily life of his people from the 17th century - through today. The students got to hold actual tools, weapons, household items, pelts, and other items.

Have a 3rd grader? Check out these conversation tips!

What were the four basic things the Wampanoag people needed to survive?

Food/ water, shelter, weapons/ tools, clothing. See how much they remember about how they procured these things!

What kind of food did the Wampanoag hunt?

In the winter, they hunted deer, bear, elk, moose, because they didn’t have refrigerators or freezers and needed to keep the meat cold. They also ate fish and shellfish throughout the year, and in milder weather, foraged for nuts, berries - their only source of sugar, as there were no honey bees or maple trees in the area.

Most of their diet was sourced from their gardens! In the spring and summer, they would move into single family settlements where they would plant their dried vegetables - including corn, beans, and squashes, which they sun dried and preserved to last throughout the year.

Upcoming CAS Events include:

  • Geology Walks with Lisa Moore from the Wellesley Natural Resources Commission
  • Sun & Moon Phases with Sprague Parent John Covey
  • Physical Changes of Matter by the Discovery Museum

Questions about CAS? Contact Wendy Englebardt.

For Your Community

WORLD OF WELLESLEY EVENT

World of Wellesley: Talking About Race with Children 10/17

Please join this upcoming community event on 10/17 at the Wellesley Middle School Cafeteria: Talking about Race with Children: Why It Matters and How to Start Doing It

Talking to young children about racism, anti-racism and bias can be daunting, even for parents who have experience with these issues in other contexts. Feeling ill equipped to engage is common, but waiting until children are developmentally ready for adult discussions misses an important window, since the roots of racism and bias can start extremely early. Come learn about the impact on children and how to get started with teachable moments for children from preschool through middle school age. The event will be led by Meredith Moore from the group Kids for Racial Justice.

Light refreshments to be provided. For more questions and information please contact info@worldofwellesley.org
